Emergency Response HAZWOPER (24 hour)
For workers involved in emergency response operations – 24-hour Emergency Response HAZWOPER classes are offered in English. These classes are held in-person. Pre‑registration is required.
The 24-Hour Emergency Response HAZWOPER course is designed to help UC campuses meet the Emergency Response to Hazardous Substances Release requirements in Title 8, California Code of Regulations (Cal. Code Regs.), Section 5192(q). This course will emphasize laboratory emergency response situations since the majority of the emergency response incidents at colleges and universities are laboratory-related. UC employees whose responsibility is to act as the site liaison with Federal, state, local, and other government authorities in regards to site activities during hazardous materials incidents are required receive at least 24 hours of training equivalent to Hazardous Materials Specialist training in Title 8, California Code of Regulations (Cal. Code Regs.), Section 5192(q)(6)(D).

The University of California has approved course funding for selected participants. Registrants who are not on the approved list may still enroll by submitting the $400 course fee.
Since UC Invoicing processes all payments, they only accept checks at the moment (no credit cards).

John Palmer, PhD
John Palmer is a chemical safety and risk assessment expert working in the field of laboratory safety since 1986. He has twice chaired the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) “Division of Chemical Health & Safety" and served as chair and councilor to the ACS San Diego Local Section. He has taught Advanced Chemical Safety for the UC San Diego’s Extension program and he served as the Safety Director for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC San Diego for over 25 years. He has served as a laboratory safety consultant and interim CHO at over a half dozen UC and Cal-State campuses and together with his wife (a UC San Diego Biosafety expert) has supported our local hazmat first-responders in technical matters.
Larry Wong, CIH, FAIHA
Larry Wong, a Certified Industrial Hygienist, has worked in the EH&S field for over 50 years. He has been designated as a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Mr. Wong retired as the EH&S Associate Director for the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) in 2019. As the Associate Director, he was responsible for providing system-wide direction, consultation, and assistance to the UC campuses and medical centers and has served as the EH&S Director at 3 UC campuses and San Francisco State University. Before coming to the University of California, Mr. Wong served as a Section Chief for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). Prior to that position, he served as an industrial hygienist with Cal/OSHA. Mr. Wong has taught HAZWOPER classes through the NEIHS grant programs since 1987.
