HAZWOPER (8 hour) Refresher
For workers involved in hazardous waste operations – 8-hour HAZWOPER classes are offered in English. These classes are held virtually via Zoom. Pre‑registration is required.
The topics covered in this interactive 8-hour Emergency Response HAZWOPER Refresher zoom course will emphasize emergency response at college campuses with particular emphasis in laboratories. The course and will include:
Review of emergency response principles and terminology
Campus health and safety issues with particular emphasis on laboratories
Risk assessment
Emergency response planning and implementation
Real-world emergency response scenarios and lessons learned
Update on health and safety issues
Interactive review games
This class will meet the annual refresher training requirements for 8 CCR 5192.
The University of California has approved course funding for selected participants. Registrants who are not on the approved list may still enroll by submitting the $150 course fee. You may pay by check through the LOHP UC Invoice system.
*For UC-Affiliated Participants, an Intercampus Financial Transaction will have to occur.

COURSE INSTRUCTORS
John Palmer, PhD
John Palmer is a chemical safety and risk assessment expert working in the field of laboratory safety since 1986. He has twice chaired the American Chemical Society’s (ACS) “Division of Chemical Health & Safety" and served as chair and councilor to the ACS San Diego Local Section. He has taught Advanced Chemical Safety for the UC San Diego’s Extension program and he served as the Safety Director for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC San Diego for over 25 years. He has served as a laboratory safety consultant and interim CHO at over a half dozen UC and Cal-State campuses and together with his wife (a UC San Diego Biosafety expert) has supported our local hazmat first-responders in technical matters.
Larry Wong, CIH, FAIHA
Larry Wong, a Certified Industrial Hygienist, has worked in the EH&S field for over 50 years. He has been designated as a Fellow of the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA). Mr. Wong retired as the EH&S Associate Director for the University of California Office of the President (UCOP) in 2019. As the Associate Director, he was responsible for providing system-wide direction, consultation, and assistance to the UC campuses and medical centers and has served as the EH&S Director at 3 UC campuses and San Francisco State University. Before coming to the University of California, Mr. Wong served as a Section Chief for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC). Prior to that position, he served as an industrial hygienist with Cal/OSHA. Mr. Wong has taught HAZWOPER classes through the NEIHS grant programs since 1987.
